Accelerated Master's Program in Bioengineering

The design of the Accelerated Master’s (AM) degree is for students to take up graduate courses along with their undergraduate courses and requirements as their schedule permits. Applicants should plan to apply during their sophomore year at the latest. Students may submit an application as early as their fourth semester in the undergraduate degree. You can find more information on rules, eligibility, deadlines, and how to apply here.

This master’s program is open only to current students with a GPA of at least 3.5. Students enrolled in this option are able to “double count” up to three courses towards both the BSE and the master’s degrees. At no time should an undergraduate student be enrolled in more than 50% of graduate level courses for the graduate degree in a single term. Engineering students cannot take more than 3 CU’s to count towards the master’s degree prior to acceptance and matriculation into the accelerated master’s degree. Please be sure to read through the SEAS Accelerated Masters page for a more detailed list of policies.

Degree Requirements

To fulfill the requirements for the MSE in Bioengineering degree, students must take 10 courses at the 5000 level or above. You may choose to write a thesis or complete the non-thesis degree. Accelerated Masters students may double count up to 3 CU’s of graduate courses to fulfill both undergraduate and graduate degree requirements. This is subject to approval by both the undergraduate and graduate program chairs/directors.

A list of degree requirements can be found here. Accelerated Masters students should create a detailed academic plan noting which 3 course units they will be counting for their UG and MS degree programs while following the guidelines of the SEAS AM rules (no more than 50% graduate courses, no more than 3cu’s counting towards Masters degree prior to acceptance, etc).

FAQ’s

When should I apply to the Accelerated Master’s Program?

Applicants should plan to apply during their sophomore year at the latest. Students may submit an application as early as their fourth semester in the undergraduate degree. You can find application details here.

How many courses can I double count from my SEAS undergraduate BSE/BAS degree with my MSE in Bioengineering?

Accelerated Masters students may double count up to 3 CU’s of graduate courses to fulfill both undergraduate and graduate degree requirements.

Can I get an Accelerated Masters in Bioengineering if I have a different SEAS UG major?

Yes! And our Bioengineering undergraduates can apply for an AM in a different SEAS Master’s program. For a list of programs and Department contacts please go here.

What are the course requirements for the MSE in Bioengineering?

You can find a list of course requirements here, as well as information on a thesis and non-thesis option.

If I get accepted to the AM program am I then considered a graduate student?

No, Accelerated Masters students are undergraduate students until they complete all of their undergraduate degree requirements. Please remember to stay under the 50% graduate courses rule per semester or you will be charged as a graduate student.

What if I decide to drop the Accelerated Masters program after I have been accepted?

Students can drop the AM by submitting a graduate petition.

Can I apply to more than one AM program?

Engineering recognizes matriculation into one Accelerated Master’s program across the schools. We do not have dual-degree Accelerated Master’s programs. Students with any questions should contact the Graduate Engineering Academic team.

Please contact our Masters Program Coordinator, Erin Reavy-Fredericks (ereavy@seas), for any questions about the BE Masters/Accelerated Masters Program.
