Minoring While Pursuing your BE Degree
Not all students pursue minors, but many do, and some earn more than one. Students choose to minor in order to pursue areas of interest and/or develop skills and knowledge in an area that is complementary to their major.
Minors can fit the BE curriculum in various ways, such as Career Path credits (3-5 CUs), Social Science and Humanities credits (5 CUs), or as Free Electives (3 CUs). For more technical minors, such as Engineering Entrepreneurship, Computational Neuroscience, Math, and Chemistry, some of your BE required courses will satisfy minor requirements, too, such as Required Math (4 CUs), Natural Science (8.5 CUs), and Professional Environment (2 CUs).
Other interests? Examples of interests and corresponding minors include:
- Studying Abroad: a Foreign Language minor
- Business: Economics or Engineering Entrepreneurship minors
- For Graduate School: Natural Sciences or another engineering discipline
Facts and Forms:
Minors usually require at least six course units. Popular minors for BE students include: mathematics, engineering entrepreneurship, economics, and chemistry. To find out a department’s minor requirements, you need to go to the department, speak with the undergraduate chair, and complete the Application for a Minor. Minors will appear on your student transcript if you complete all of the required courses. In addition to the minors offered by Penn Engineering, you can also view a complete list of minors offered by the College of Arts and Sciences.
